Biden's First Public Appearance After Cancer Spread News

Former President Joe Biden was spotted attending Mass in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday, marking his first public outing since his son Hunter Biden disclosed that the 83-year-old's prostate cancer has spread beyond his bones and is causing him severe pain.

Biden, dressed in a dark suit, walked into Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Church with assistance from Secret Service agents, according to reporting from the Daily Mail. He spoke with fellow parishioners before departing.

The appearance came two days after Hunter Biden gave an emotional interview to BBC Newsnight on Friday in which he described his father's condition in stark terms. "The cancer has spread, metastasized into his bones and further," Hunter Biden said. "It's very painful, and it's very debilitating in many respects."

Hunter Biden grew visibly emotional during the interview, describing it as "really sad to watch" and saying that he wished his father would complain more about the pain he endures. "But he's still out there. He's still doing his thing," he added.

Joe Biden's office announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9, the second-highest grade on the scale used to measure prostate cancer severity. The cancer had already metastasized to his bones at the time of the initial diagnosis.

The former president began radiation therapy and hormone treatment following the diagnosis. A spokesman for Biden declined to comment on Hunter Biden's statements about the further spread of the disease, offering no new details about treatment changes or the specific sites of metastasis beyond the bones.

Hunter Biden's disclosure represents the first public acknowledgment that Biden's cancer has spread beyond the bone metastases disclosed at his diagnosis more than a year ago. The revelation came as Biden remains engaged in public life, continuing to speak on political matters and making occasional public appearances.

Former first lady Jill Biden told NBC News in June that Joe Biden would "live with cancer forever," noting that the metastasis to bone "makes it a whole different story" from a standard prostate cancer diagnosis.

In the BBC interview, Hunter Biden also addressed his pardon from his father, which covered any crimes committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. Hunter Biden had been facing federal gun charges and had pleaded guilty to tax evasion charges.

The Wilmington appearance was Biden's first known public outing following the BBC interview. Biden has maintained a relatively low public profile since leaving office in January, splitting time between his Delaware home and other residences.
