Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz After Attacking Cypriot Vessel
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping until further notice following an attack on a Cypriot ship attempting to pass through the waterway. The vessel's crew abandoned ship with one sailor reported missing. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard issued an official statement declaring: "Due to the security breach caused by the illegal intervention of foreign elements, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the cessation of American intervention in the area, and no vessel movement will be permitted." Iran claims the ship endangered safety by turning off its transponder while transiting the Omani route. The Revolutionary Guard warned that any exploitation of the incident for "new aggression" would be met with a "powerful response," placing responsibility on the "American-Zionist enemy and countries that have made their territory available to the enemy."
