Likud Claims UAE Election Interference

Netanyahu's party demands criminal investigation into Haaretz, journalist Shlomi Eldar, and Democrats party, claiming Palestinian official in Emirates orchestrated false story

Benjamin Netanyahu

The Likud party on Wednesday evening called for criminal investigations into journalist Shlomi Eldar, Haaretz newspaper, former IDF deputy chief Yair Golan, and the Democrats party. The ruling party claimed that a recent report published by Eldar constitutes part of what it characterized as foreign interference in Israel's upcoming elections.

"The real scandal that has emerged in the last two days is blatant foreign interference in Israel's elections," Likud stated in its announcement.

Likud pointed to Mohammed Dahlan, a senior Palestinian official residing in the United Arab Emirates, as the alleged orchestrator behind the story. "It has become clear that the person behind the false report in Haaretz is the senior Palestinian official Mohammed Dahlan, who is based in the Emirates," the party said.

The party further alleged that Dahlan has a political interest in replacing Israel's current government. According to Likud, "Dahlan has formed a joint list with Hamas for Palestinian Authority elections. He wants to topple the right-wing government led by Netanyahu because he dreams of taking control of the Gaza Strip. For this, he needs a weak left-wing government of Eisenkot, Yair Golan, Liberman and the Arab parties. Such a government would withdraw from Gaza and transfer it to his control."

Likud also addressed what it described as connections between Eldar and a left-wing organization allegedly linked to the Democrats party. "It has also been revealed that Shlomi Eldar, who published the fake news, received payment from a left-wing organization connected to Yair Golan's 'Democrats' party, in order to spread his false libel," the party claimed.

The party raised questions about recent visits to the UAE by Golan and Democrats party member Ronen Bar: "Additionally, about two months ago, Yair Golan and Ronen Bar secretly visited the United Arab Emirates. Is this secret visit connected to the false publication in Haaretz?"

Likud concluded by demanding formal action: "Likud demands the opening of a criminal investigation against Shlomi Eldar, Ruth Yuval, Haaretz newspaper, Yair Golan and the 'Democrats' party, due to suspicion of attempting to disrupt the elections with foreign entities."
