Rare August Rain Forecast for Israel

Meteorological service predicts unusual autumn-like weather system will bring precipitation to northern and central regions, potentially breaking historical records for the month

Rainy weather in Israel

After an extended period of oppressive heat that has characterized much of August, Israel's Meteorological Service is forecasting a dramatic shift: an autumn-like weather system is expected to arrive Saturday night into Sunday, bringing rain in what meteorologists are calling an exceptionally rare event for this time of year.

According to the updated forecast, localized rainfall is expected across northern Israel, the central region, the coastal plain, the lowlands, and inland areas. By Sunday morning, some areas could see double-digit millimeter accumulations, a highly unusual phenomenon for August.

This marks the second consecutive rain event in August, with the Meteorological Service emphasizing that even a single rainfall occurrence during this month is already considered rare. If the forecast materializes fully, it could break historical precipitation records for the period.

This August has been characterized by an unusual combination of above-average temperatures alongside anomalous rain events. Mid-month, heavy rains fell across the north, Jerusalem, and surrounding areas, with the Maaleh Adumim weather station recording a peak of 21 millimeters in one hour, followed by 25 millimeters, quantities exceptionally high for the summer season.
