Russia-North Korea Bridge Opens

The new crossing over the Tumen River marks a deepening partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine

Russia and North Korea Open First Road Bridge Linking the Two Countries

A new road bridge spanning the Tumen River opened to traffic today, creating the first direct highway link between Russia and North Korea. The infrastructure project represents a significant milestone in relations between the two nations, which share a short land border in Russia's Far East.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song participated in the opening ceremony via video link before vehicles began crossing the span. The bridge itself stretches approximately one kilometer and features two traffic lanes. Including approach roads and border facilities on both sides, the entire project covers nearly five kilometers. On the Russian side, authorities constructed a new border crossing with ten lanes designed to process up to 300 vehicles and more than 2,300 people daily when operating at full capacity.

Until now, the two countries were connected by only one land crossing: the Friendship Bridge, a railway bridge that opened in 1959. The new structure fundamentally changes cross-border access by enabling direct road vehicle passage between Russia and North Korea for the first time.

The project had been in planning for some time. Moscow and Pyongyang signed the agreement to build the bridge in 2024 during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea. Construction began in April 2025, and within approximately 18 months, workers completed the connection across the river.

Russian officials have framed the bridge primarily as an economic and transportation initiative aimed at increasing trade volume, reducing shipping costs, and enabling smoother movement of goods and people between the nations. For Moscow, the crossing also provides access to roads leading deeper into Russia's transportation network.

Yet the infrastructure project carries clear geopolitical implications. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Moscow and Pyongyang have significantly strengthened their relationship. North Korea has provided Russia with military support for the Ukraine war, including deploying forces to Russian territory, and ties between the two countries have grown closer than at any point in recent years.
