The Shin Bet under David Zinni announced Sunday that it will provide security for Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yisrael party and leader of the largest party according to current polls.
According to a report on Kan 11, the decision came directly from Zinni and has been passed to the VIP Protection Unit for implementation.
The reversal comes roughly a month after Zinni initially decided not to provide security for Eisenkot, despite repeated requests from his team. Eisenkot's staff had argued that the threat level against him had risen significantly during the heated election campaign, citing both the charged political atmosphere and existing Iranian threats against senior Israeli figures.
Earlier this week, Zinni's office had informed Eisenkot's team that the Shin Bet would provide a liaison officer and intelligence assistance before specific events, but would not supply a full security detail.
That position has now been reversed, with Zinni deciding that Eisenkot will receive full security protection.
