Police say multiple people were injured Wednesday in an incident at the Welfen-Gymnasium high school in Schongau, a small town in western Upper Bavaria, that authorities are treating as a possible mass casualty situation. A suspect has already been taken into custody.
The Upper Bavaria South police headquarters confirmed a large scale operation was underway at the school on Dornauer Weg, with numerous officers dispatched to establish the exact circumstances. Police described the incident as pointing toward an amok situation and said they currently estimate a single digit number of people injured, though the precise severity has not yet been confirmed. Officers asked the public to avoid the area around the school. A gathering point for parents and family members of students was set up at the local fire station on Bahnhofstrasse.
The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. Police have not yet released the motive, the suspect's identity, or a confirmed casualty count, and said they cannot rule out that the incident was an attempted mass attack.
Schongau is a small town of more than 12,000 residents on the banks of the Lech river in western Upper Bavaria. This is a developing story and details remain preliminary.
