U.S. Cranks Up Ceasefire Heat

Senior Egyptian sources told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar this morning: "The American pressure to achieve a temporary ceasefire appears more effective today than ever, despite Israel’s declared plans to expand operations in Gaza." An Egyptian official involved in the talks told the newspaper that the U.S. now believes continuing the war and expanding military operations is a "waste of time," given the inability to achieve a decisive outcome, the growing risks to the hostages’ lives, and the escalating regional tensions. The source added: "The talks being held with Hamas show positive signs of openness to American ideas aimed at achieving a ceasefire soon." American officials noted that the expected ceasefire represents "an opportunity to achieve goals through negotiation," particularly regarding the return of the hostages.
