"Think of it as a military version of instant replay, but with far more data," says Captain Donald. "Commanders can see troop movements, review communications, and analyze how events unfolded, all synchronized in perfect detail."

The system proved its worth early in 2024 during the investigation of a friendly fire incident in Gaza. Using Lasso, commanders discovered previously unknown artillery fire in the area at the time of the incident. Working with developers, they were able to reconstruct the entire sequence of events that night, bringing much-needed clarity to the investigation.

What makes Lasso particularly effective is its user-friendly interface. It integrates seamlessly with existing military systems like the Digital Ground Army platform, which tracks both friendly and enemy positions. This means soldiers don't need extensive training to use it effectively.

The development team maintains close contact with field commanders to ensure the system meets actual combat needs. "We regularly visit forces in the field," explains Captain Donald. "We need to understand their challenges firsthand - what information they need during debriefings, what features would help them most."

The system also helps optimize crucial battlefield operations like casualty evacuation. Learning officers can analyze response times by reviewing when distress calls were made and how long it took rescue forces to arrive, helping improve future response times.

"Our ultimate goal is continuous improvement," Captain Donald concludes. "Whether it's understanding our own tactics better or analyzing enemy strategies, Lasso helps ensure we're better prepared for future operations. And we're constantly adding new capabilities based on what we learn in the field."
