Hezbollah Drone Strikes Iron Dome Launcher

Hezbollah released footage Sunday night showing what it said was a First-Person View drone strike on an Iron Dome battery near Israel’s northern border.

The IDF did not immediately issue a public response to the video. Unofficially, IDF sources did not dispute the authenticity of the footage, according to reports. The incident may have taken place several days earlier, with Hezbollah releasing the video only after preparing the recording.

The strike points to a growing challenge for Israel’s air defense network, as Hezbollah continues to use FPV drones against military targets along the northern front. Unlike conventional drones, FPV drones are manually operated and can be flown with precision at low altitude. Some systems use physical cable connections or other methods that make them harder to detect, jam or track with standard electronic warfare tools.

The IDF has improved its ability to intercept conventional drones since 2024, but FPV drones have created a separate operational problem. The technology became widely used in the Russia-Ukraine war and has since been adopted by other forces because of its low cost, maneuverability and ability to strike exposed positions or equipment.

During a visit by The Jerusalem Post to southern Lebanon last week, senior IDF officials described several pilot programs aimed at identifying and shooting down FPV drones more effectively. However, the military is still trying to adapt while Hezbollah continues to deploy the threat in real time.

The reported strike also raises questions about the protection of Israel’s own air defense batteries, which are among the most important assets in the country’s defensive system. Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow batteries are designed to intercept rockets, missiles and other aerial threats, but they can themselves become targets.

Former IDF air defense chief Brig. Gen. (res.) Ran Kochav warned in March that Israel was not doing enough to protect its air defense systems after similar assets in other countries had been attacked. He said that while all parts of the country require protection, air defense systems are especially critical because damage to them can weaken the broader defensive network.

Hezbollah’s publication of the footage appears intended not only to show a tactical success, but also to send a message that Israeli defensive systems remain vulnerable despite the IDF’s technological advantages. The incident comes amid continued fighting and ceasefire violations in the north, where Hezbollah has repeatedly targeted Israeli troops and military infrastructure.
