Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delayed an extensive military operation in Lebanon on Wednesday despite a clear ceasefire violation by Hezbollah. Senior defense officials confirmed that while military leadership prepared target packages for a wide scale response, political leaders restricted initial actions to localized strikes to avoid friction with Washington.
Military leadership submitted operational targets to the cabinet following what military officials designated a blatant violation of ceasefire terms by Hezbollah terrorists.
"Target lists were drawn up and submitted to the political leadership," a senior military official stated regarding the proposed strike plan.
Rather than authorizing the full operational plan, political leaders instructed military forces to execute limited strikes against weapons storage facilities and infrastructure near the southern village of Al-Mansouri.
Prior to the strikes, the IDF Arabic spokesperson issued an urgent evacuation directive to local residents, noting that military action was necessary to address Hezbollah infrastructure.
"Given Hezbollah's violation of the ceasefire agreement, the IDF is forced to act forcefully against it," the IDF Arabic spokesperson stated. "The IDF has no intention of harming you. For your safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately and move north of the village."
The localized military activity occurred alongside diplomatic talks in Rome, where Israeli and Lebanese representatives discussed ceasefire compliance, pilot security zones, tunnel demolitions, and border infrastructure.
Lebanese newspaper Al-Modoun reported that Lebanese officials engaged in emergency communications during the Rome summit to halt scheduled Israeli strikes in Al-Mansouri.
Military analysts noted rising frustration within the Israeli defense establishment regarding the performance of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern sectors. Defense officials reported minimal operational activity by Lebanese government troops in designated security zones near the Litani River.
Following the initial warnings, targeted strikes were reported across southern sectors, including an incident in Tebnine where local outlets reported 1 person killed and 11 injured near a local facility. Security consultations between Prime Minister Netanyahu and defense leadership remain ongoing regarding potential further action.
