Jerusalem Day Tensions Boil Over: Chairs Thrown as Flag March Ignites Old City Clashes

While over 50,000 participants gather for the annual Flag March, the Old City has descended into chaos with physical altercations, racist chants, and violent friction between activists and residents.

Chaos in the Muslim Quarter

Even before the official launch of the "Flag March" on Thursday evening, the narrow alleys of the Old City's Muslim Quarter became the site of ugly confrontations.

  • Groups of young Jewish activists, arriving early to the area, were filmed harassing local merchants. In several documented incidents, chairs and various objects were hurled at business owners.
  • Chants of "May your village burn" echoed through the streets as the crowds moved toward the Western Wall.
  • Despite a declared policy of "zero tolerance," police struggled to contain multiple flashpoints. As of late Thursday afternoon, 13 suspects have been arrested for involvement in the disturbances.

The "Human Buffer"

In a recurring scene of ideological friction, left-wing activists positioned themselves within the Muslim Quarter to create a human barrier between the marchers and Arab residents.

Activists accused the police of failing to protect local residents from harassment.

Police were seen forcibly removing several activists, including one woman who attempted to physically block a group of marchers, to maintain the flow of the procession.

Security Logistics & Safety Caps

Jerusalem remains at its highest security alert level.

  • Thousands of police officers, Border Police (Magav), and volunteers are deployed across the capital.
  • Due to strict safety regulations, the Western Wall plaza is being capped at 10,000 people at any given time, despite the expected arrival of 50,000+ marchers.
