Satellite images reveal a new drama in the Red Sea: a 2,000-meter (6,560-foot) runway has been built on volcanic Zuqar Island off the coast of Yemen. This mysterious project is considered the latest initiative by forces opposing the Houthi rebels.

Zuqar Island is another node in a network of maritime and air bases in a region critical to international shipping, where the Houthis have attacked more than 100 vessels. Its strategic location (about 90 km from the Hodeidah port controlled by the Houthis) allows for extensive aerial monitoring over the Red Sea and the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Experts estimate that the primary purpose of the base is to prevent Houthi weapons smuggling and improve surveillance over Hodeidah’s coast.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is considered the main force behind the construction, having previously built similar runways in the area (including in Mayun, Mocha, Dahubab, and Abd al-Kuri). Established Dubai-based shipping companies have reportedly confirmed orders for asphalt deliveries to the island.

The construction of this network of bases comes as Houthi rebels face increasing pressure following successful interception of explosives, alongside an intensive U.S. air campaign (Operation Rough Rider) and ongoing strikes by Israel.
