Powerful flames erupted from upper floors of a residential building in Mea Shearim, sending thick smoke across the neighborhood as dozens of emergency teams rushed to the scene
A massive fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a residential building in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighborhood on Shaarei Pina Street, prompting the deployment of dozens of emergency response teams to the scene.
Footage from the scene shows intense flames from one of the upper floors of the multi-story residential building. A thick gray and black plume of smoke rose high into the sky, visible from a distance.
Jerusalem District Police issued a statement: "Police forces from the Jerusalem District were dispatched a short time ago to the Mea Shearim neighborhood following a report of a fire that broke out in a building. Officers are operating at the scene alongside firefighters and medical personnel to ensure the evacuation of all residents from the building, prevent loss of life, and enable emergency and rescue forces to operate quickly and safely."
The statement continued: "Officers are directing traffic in the area and keeping traffic routes clear for emergency vehicles. The public is asked to avoid sending bystanders to the fire area in order to allow rescue forces to complete their operations."
