President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have decided to dismiss Kimberly Guilfoyle from her position as US ambassador to Greece, a close ally of Israel in the region.
According to White House sources, discussions regarding Guilfoyle's tenure have been ongoing for weeks. She was appointed to the role based on her Greek heritage and prominent standing in Republican women's organizations.
Her name has recently been linked to allegations of a "pay-for-access" scheme, in which she and her associates allegedly charged fees and provided services to parties based on their willingness to pay or donate to various organizations they headed.
State Department sources indicate that Rubio pushed for her dismissal, and Trump agreed following the allegations against her.
There is concern in Greece that the dismissal could damage relations with the United States, particularly given that bribery and corruption are recognized problems in the country. Greek officials worry the disruption could harm coordination at a critical time of friction with Turkey.
