A specialized vocational institution dedicated to training humanoid robots has opened in Hangzhou, in China's Zhejiang province, described as the first of its kind globally. The inaugural class includes 30 humanoid robots undergoing practical training designed to prepare them for integration into various roles across manufacturing, service industries, security, and entertainment sectors.
The facility operates much like a traditional vocational school for humans: robots undergo physical capability assessments, follow curricula tailored to their structural design and abilities, practice hands-on tasks, and ultimately take examinations to receive professional certification. The process aims to demonstrate that these machines can perform useful functions outside controlled research environments.
The curriculum is divided into four main areas, technical skills, nursing care, arts, and sports. Training is customized to each robot's hardware specifications, including range of motion, gripping capability, sensors, and physical stability, ensuring that learned tasks are actually executable in real-world conditions.
According to the project's developers, the emphasis extends beyond improving the machines' movement to developing their cognitive capabilities. The robots employ artificial intelligence systems that integrate vision, language, and action, alongside logical reasoning abilities. This combination is intended to enable them to identify unfamiliar obstacles, understand complex instructions, and plan new courses of action, rather than simply following pre-programmed sequences.
Documentation released from the facility shows humanoid robots participating in sports training, musical exercises, and various household tasks designed to test balance, coordination, movement precision, and adaptability. The training environment simulates less predictable situations, with the goal of preparing robots for work in dynamic spaces rather than just uniform production lines.
The school was established in collaboration with the Robotics Institute of Zhejiang University and industry partners, as part of a broader experimental base for embodied artificial intelligence applications. The initiative aligns with China's ambition to accelerate the introduction of autonomous and humanoid robots into factories, public spaces, and service sectors.
The vision is to create a standardized pathway where companies don't simply purchase an experimental machine, but rather a robot that has completed training, passed examinations, and received certification to perform defined tasks. If the model proves successful, it could mark another step in the transition of advanced robotics from the laboratory to the labor market.
