Strategic Shift

Why Iran and the Houthis are Suddenly Targeting Southern Israel

Why are the south of Israel and the Negev seeing more sirens? Defense experts analyze how Iranian weather conditions and a shift in launch locations are dictating the latest missile barrages.

We’re seeing a significant shift in the long-range threat from the East. In just the last few days, both Iran and Houthi rebels have ramped up missile fire specifically targeting Southern Israel. But this isn't just random, there are two very specific reasons why the South is currently in the crosshairs.

Indeed, the data over the last 24 hours tells the story. On Monday morning alone, four missiles were launched directly from Iran toward the South. This followed a pair of Houthi missiles fired from Yemen at the same region overnight.

REASON 1: THE GEOGRAPHIC SHIFT

Defense officials say the Iranians are changing their "launch map." They’ve moved away from their traditional sites in Western and Northern Iran, shifting operations to the center of the country. This deeper, inland position allows them to funnel their trajectory toward Israel’s Southern districts. It’s a strategic move, likely because Western Iran has been under the microscope of Israeli operations, forcing the regime to find "quieter" ground to fire from.

REASON 2: THE WEATHER FACTOR

Mother Nature is also playing a role. Right now, Western Iran is being hammered by heavy storms, and the North is dealing with significant snowfall. These conditions make it incredibly difficult for launch crews to operate or even move equipment without being spotted. By moving to the central, clearer regions of the country, they can maintain their "munitions economy" and keep the pressure on.

THE WARNING FOR CENTRAL ISRAEL:

However, security experts warn: Do not be lulled into a false sense of security in the Center. Just because Gush Dan and Tel Aviv aren't seeing as many sirens right now doesn't mean the threat has vanished. Officials believe Iran is carefully managing its stockpile, waiting for a moment when they think the Center’s guard is down to "challenge" our defense systems.

The message from the defense establishment is clear: stay alert but stay the course. While the threat remains, Israel is fully prepared for any scenario, whether it's aimed at the Negev or the heart of the country. The goal remains to maintain a daily routine, even under the shadow of the sirens.
