Breaking His Silence

Rebbe Speaks Out After Jerusalem Attack

Following morning prayers, the Hasidic leader praised his followers' courage in protecting a wedding celebration from extremists, but issued a stern warning against responding with violence

On Tuesday evening, the Karlin-Stolin Rebbe arrived at his study hall on Avinoam Yellin Street in Jerusalem to participate in the sheva brochas celebration for his grandson.

Dozens of extremists gathered outside the venue and hurled harsh epithets at the Rebbe, including "butcher" and "impure one, get out." The protesters subsequently attempted to prevent the Rebbe from leaving the premises.

The incident quickly escalated into violent clashes between Karlin Hasidim and the demonstrators.

The Hasidic leader broke his silence Wednesday morning and addressed the incident.

Opening his remarks, the Rebbe expressed deep appreciation for the devotion shown by his Hasidim who were present at the scene, describing the extremist stronghold in stark terms: "You defended the honor of the celebration and the honor of the bride and groom at great personal risk, in a stronghold of zealots who recognize no boundaries."

However, alongside his praise for their dedication, the Rebbe issued an unambiguous warning to his followers against descending into violence or being drawn into provocations.

Despite the serious assault and the pain it caused, the Rebbe made clear there is no place for any display of violence or retaliation. "The use of force is not the way of Torah and not our way," he emphasized. "Even in the face of severe provocations, we must maintain the purity of our camp and not descend into the path of violence."

The unusual directness of the remarks resonated widely among his Hasidim, who once again saw their leader's consistent position throughout: to distance themselves from any act of violence.
