Dozens of Peleg Yerushalmi demonstrators began gathering in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak this afternoon ahead of a protest called by HaRav Azriel Auerbach shlita in response to the arrest of yeshiva students by military authorities.

Footage filmed at the Jerusalem protest site shows the moment demonstrators descended onto the roadway and began the demonstration at 4:00 PM, in line with the advance notice issued by Peleg Yerushalmi last night.

Additional footage shows protesters assembling on Highway 4 at the entrance to Bnei Brak. In striking footage from the entrance to Jerusalem, a protester is seen being run over by a vehicle that broke through the demonstration.

Following the demonstration at the entrance to Jerusalem, the light rail suspended operations and the road was closed to traffic.

At the same time, a separate demonstration by Peleg Harzefanim began at the Bar Ilan junction (Tzomet Maran) in Jerusalem, joined by Sephardic communities protesting the arrest of bnei Torah and yeshiva students this week.

Another angle of the moment the protester was run over in Jerusalem:

Police spokesperson statement:

Demonstration in Jerusalem: hundreds of protesters are blocking the entrance to the city at Gesher HaMeitarim.

Following a demonstration that began at the entrance to Jerusalem, the entrance to the city from the direction of Gesher HaMeitarim has been closed.

Jerusalem District police are reinforcing forces at the scene and preparing to enforce public order and clear the roads as necessary. Traffic Division officers are diverting traffic at the entrance to the city to alternate routes. Drivers are asked to follow police instructions and avoid coming to the area.

In addition, dozens of protesters have begun gathering on Bar Ilan Street, disrupting traffic at the location.

Israel Police will permit freedom of expression and protest as provided by law, but will not permit violation of public order or harm to police officers and citizens.
