Deri Blocks Fee on Uman Pilgrims
Shas party leader Aryeh Deri blocked a proposal Thursday that would have imposed a 330-shekel fee on each traveler to Uman, aimed at covering Israel’s estimated 10 million shekel expense for a temporary airport and security arrangements in Moldova. “The travelers to Uman save all year from their bread to pay for the trip,” Deri said. “We cannot also make them pay for security and protection. This must be on the state’s account.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backed Deri’s position.
