Egypt to Hamas: Give us your weapons for safekeeping

Egypt has proposed that Hamas’ weapons be transferred to its custody as a form of deposit for an indefinite period, according to a report today (Tuesday) at midday on Kan Reshet Bet radio. The Egyptian idea is part of a broader plan for the “day after” in the Gaza Strip. The plan also envisions a temporary technocratic administration to govern Gaza for several years under Palestinian Authority supervision, while sidelining Hamas from direct rule. Hamas, however, is now trying to avoid resolving the weapons issue, which the terror group considers a red line in negotiations. In the past, it has been reported that this very issue is at the heart of the dispute between Israel and Hamas regarding ending the war in Gaza. Israel demands that Hamas’ military wing cease to exist, a condition the terror group flatly rejects.
