IDF Chief of Staff warns mandatory service may drop to 30 months by 2027
The IDF Chief of General Staff has warned that mandatory military service is expected to be reduced to 30 months starting January 2027, which would place unreasonable burden on reservists amid expanding IDF missions. He emphasized the need for comprehensive legislation extending mandatory service to 36 months, updating the Reserve Service Law, and enabling increased recruitment. The Chief of Staff clarified he did not endorse any specific conscription law, but stressed the need for legislation addressing the IDF's immediate operational needs as presented over the past year.
