Iran Oil Spill: Hormuz Strait Tanker Strikes Cause Crisis

Iranian coastlines, particularly around Qeshm Island, are now blanketed with thick layers of crude oil and tar following repeated petroleum leaks from tankers damaged during the ongoing conflict in the Strait of Hormuz. Videos circulating on social media show beaches turned entirely black and oil slicks flooding coastal waters.

The environmental crisis stems from warfare that has engulfed the region since February 2026, involving dozens of attacks on commercial vessels navigating the critical shipping lane. These reciprocal strikes have inflicted severe damage on ships, triggering fires and oil spills that have accumulated over months of fighting.

Major Leak from Greek Tanker

One of the most significant spills originated from a strike on the Greek-flagged tanker Kavomilias in July 2026 off the coast of Oman. The vessel's crew abandoned ship after the attack, and it was subsequently towed into Iranian waters near Larak Island. Satellite imagery revealed extensive oil slicks drifting toward both Qeshm and Larak islands.

Additional leaks from Iranian vessels and damaged facilities have reached ecologically sensitive areas, including the Hara mangrove reserve. Iranian Authorities Acknowledge Contamination

Iranian emergency officials have confirmed the pollution and ordered urgent cleanup operations, though they noted that the precise source is still under investigation. International observers emphasize that this is not a single incident involving multiple tanker explosions, but rather an accumulation of environmental damage sustained throughout months of combat.

Separately, a large oil slick has been identified off the Omani coast originating from the Caroline Bazangi tanker, which was carrying Russian crude and ran aground, though this spill is farther from the Iranian islands. The widespread contamination has raised serious concerns about long-term ecological damage that will persist well beyond the end of military hostilities in the region.
