Israelis Receive Earthquake Warning as 5.2-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Egypt

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck Egypt early Monday morning and was felt across parts of southern Israel and neighboring countries, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

The earthquake occurred shortly before 3:00 a.m., with its epicenter reportedly located near the Suez Canal, approximately 200 kilometers from Israel, at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

Residents of Eilat and the Dead Sea region reported feeling the tremor. An alert sent to Android devices in Israel described the earthquake as having a magnitude of 5.9.

Egyptian media reported that the shaking lasted several dozen seconds and was felt across Greater Cairo, Suez, Dakahlia and other provinces.

Residents said beds, lamps and furniture moved during the earthquake. “I felt the bed dancing,” one resident of Cairo’s Maadi neighborhood wrote. Another said, “The bed moved back and forth and woke me from my sleep.”

Egyptian authorities said no injuries or property damage had been reported. Cairo officials said the situation remained stable, while the Egyptian Red Crescent reported receiving no notifications of injuries or structural collapses.

Egypt’s Health Ministry activated its central emergency operations room and placed hospitals on heightened alert as a precaution.
