Hundreds of rioters blocked roads, hurled stones and bottles at police and civilians, and stole a municipal vehicle near Shmuel HaNavi Street; one Border Police officer lightly wounded
Following a night of violent disturbances in Jerusalem, police announced Tuesday morning the arrest of 11 suspects on charges of public disorder.
According to police, the violent disorder began around 3:00 a.m. in the area of Chaim Bar-Lev and Zacks streets. The riots erupted near the hillula of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov zt"l being held by Rav Shalom Arush in the large sukkah at the Chut Shel Chesed institutions on Shmuel HaNavi Street in Jerusalem.
During the disturbances, police said, hundreds of young rioters blocked major thoroughfares, hurled stones and objects at civilians and police forces operating in the area, damaged municipal vehicles, and stole one of them before abandoning it. "Police forces, including Border Police fighters, acted to disperse them using means up to achieving control of the scene," police stated.
During the disorder and the police response, a Border Police officer was struck in the head by a bottle and evacuated for medical treatment in light condition. Another person located by officers was evacuated in light condition after apparently being attacked by the rioters.
The rioters later moved to the Sha'ar Shechem (Damascus Gate) area, where they clashed with local residents and police again acted to disperse them. Police reported that a total of 11 suspects were arrested on charges of public disorder, vandalism and violent incidents, and were transferred for interrogation at the police station.
"This is serious conduct by lawbreakers who came with the purpose of causing damage, committing acts of vandalism, and attacking security forces and civilians," police said. "We will not tolerate violent riots and will act with all means to locate additional participants and bring them and those arrested in the act to full justice."
