After being removed from the Degel HaTorah party list for Israel's 26th Knesset in a late-night announcement, Knesset Member Uri Maklev has released a public farewell statement reflecting on nearly two decades of parliamentary service.
Maklev, who served in the Knesset for approximately 18 years, addressed supporters with an emotional message summarizing his tenure. Opening his statement with "following the decision that was made," Maklev notably did not specify that the decision came from leading rabbinical authorities. a detail observers note reflects internal party disagreement over the move. "I wish to turn to you, dear public, to thank you for the privilege granted to me with divine assistance to serve the entire public and stand by your side throughout the years," he wrote.
Maklev emphasized his commitment to his role: "I was privileged to receive this mission and I endeavored to carry it out faithfully and honestly. I did my utmost to be attentive to the general and individual needs of the entire public", language that some interpret as highlighting his focus on public service rather than party operatives, "to act for the sacred causes of Israel and in public systems."
The outgoing lawmaker pointed to what he considers his signature achievement: establishing the Haredi Authority, an initiative that has provided extensive support to the ultra-Orthodox community on a scale not seen in previous years. "In recent years I was also privileged to initiate and establish the 'Haredi Authority,' which was warmly received," Maklev wrote, "and operates with great success in varied and vital activities in 57 local authorities."
He thanked constituents for their feedback and support: "Along the way you gave me feedback, strength and appreciation, in special and fruitful cooperation. I am grateful for that."
Maklev also appeared to push back against suggestions that age necessitated his replacement with younger representatives, writing: "Every day I felt the mission anew, as if I had begun it today. The mission was not burdensome to me on my last day as it was on my first day."
He concluded by expressing his continued willingness to serve: "I have the desire and readiness to continue serving and doing everything in my power for the public, from any position, as much as will be possible for me. With blessings for a good and blessed year, may your heart's wishes be fulfilled for the good."
