Japanese customs authorities at Tokyo's Haneda Airport intercepted an unusual smuggling attempt when they discovered approximately 200 live lizards concealed inside clothing items in the luggage of a 23-year-old Mexican traveler.
According to reports, the reptiles had been crammed into roughly 22 pairs of socks and shirts. The smuggling operation was foiled before it could proceed far: Japanese authorities had received advance intelligence that someone would attempt to bring lizards into the country ahead of a scheduled reptile exhibition.
When officials inspected the suitcase, they uncovered the extraordinary cache of animals. Among the lizards were nine protected Mexican alligator lizards, a species that enjoys legal protection. One of the creatures was found dead.
