New Suspicion in Eldar Dayan Death Investigation

The complex investigation being conducted by the Central Unit of the Sharon District Police into the tragic death of Eldar Yitzhak Dayan continues to develop in new directions. Alongside the existing suspicion of homicide, investigators are now pursuing another significant line of inquiry: suspicion that Dayan was severely abandoned while injured.

According to details revealed Sunday evening on i24NEWS by crime reporter Lee Ayash, investigators are examining whether Dayan's two companions understood the severity of his medical condition but knowingly chose to leave him behind without providing life-saving assistance.

The shift in the investigation came after the two suspects, who had until now maintained strict silence, began breaking that silence and providing detailed accounts to the investigative team. In their new testimonies, the two have begun offering explanations that align with some of the evidence collected at the scene. The special investigative team is now focusing not only on the direct factors that led to Dayan's death, but also on the chain of behavior by the two companions once they discovered he had been injured during the incident.

Investigation findings indicate that during those dramatic hours, Eldar Dayan was already injured. Following a violent altercation that occurred in the Hod HaSharon and Yarkon Park area, and while all three individuals were fleeing, the two companions fully understood his physical condition yet did not seek medical assistance and did not help him themselves. As part of the legal examination currently underway, investigators are trying to determine whether the two knew with certainty what his condition was and decided to abandon him alone in the open area to save themselves, or whether they lost him during the flight.

If the suspicion of abandonment is substantiated, the legal framework may rely, among other things, on provisions of the law regarding "do not stand idly by your neighbor's blood"—a biblical principle incorporated into Israeli law. Investigators are examining whether there is direct criminal liability for the two suspects in failing to act to save Dayan's life when it was clear to them that he required urgent medical help.

As previously reported, last week Israeli police officially confirmed that the body found in an open area near Highway 40 was that of Eldar Dayan, and the suspects were brought to the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court, which extended their detention.

Parallel to obtaining new accounts from the suspects, Sharon District investigators have additional forensic findings that were located at the scene where Dayan's body was ultimately found, and these have been sent for comprehensive laboratory testing. A senior official involved in the investigation stated Sunday evening that the pieces are beginning to come together, and estimated that within the coming days security forces will be able to accurately and fully map out the sequence of events that led to Eldar Dayan's death.

The case of Dayan's disappearance began on July 18, 2024, when he went out with two friends for an evening in central Israel. During the outing, a violent altercation developed in the Hod HaSharon and Yarkon Park area between the three and a group of five other young people. According to the police investigation, during the fight one of the companions attempted to run over the youths with Dayan's vehicle, and the car's windshield was damaged. The three then fled to a gas station in the Petah Tikva area, abandoned the vehicle, removed its license plates, and went into hiding.

At this point their paths diverged: the two companions returned by public transportation to Dimona, while Eldar Dayan's trail went cold after he sent his girlfriend the message "there's trouble." The two companions were arrested in Dimona and their detention was extended on suspicion of obstructing an investigation, threats, conspiracy to commit a crime, and endangering human life. Now, with the development of the investigation and the new suspicion of abandonment, the legal picture may change significantly.
