Nuclear Expectations?: US WC-135R “Constant Phoenix” Nuclear Sniffer Plane Flies Over Northern States | What Does It Mean?

A specialized US nuclear surveillance aircraft, the WC-135R Constant Phoenix, recently took off from Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha and is flying unusual patterns across several northern states. This aircraft is one of only three in existence and is designed to detect nuclear fallout in real time, typically deployed during significant nuclear threats. Its activation comes shortly after Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities and amid escalating Iranian threats of retaliation. The last similar deployment occurred in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, underscoring the gravity of the current situation.
