Oil Tanker Damaged by Mysterious Explosion Near Libya
The Vilamoura, a tanker carrying one million barrels of oil, sustained damage from an explosion at sea near Libya and is now being towed to Greece for a damage assessment. The cause of the blast remains unclear, but the vessel had previously docked at Russian ports including Ust-Luga and Novorossiysk to load oil. This marks the fifth such incident this year. Analysts suspect Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR) may be behind the sabotage, as part of Kyiv’s ongoing campaign to disrupt Russian energy infrastructure following Moscow’s full-scale invasion. In February, Ukrainian drones targeted the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, further signaling Ukraine’s intent to strike at Russia’s energy lifelines.
