Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are scheduled to appear in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, an Orthodox Jew, just hours before the start of the Tisha B'Av fast.
The hearing, set for 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time, will focus on establishing the schedule for upcoming criminal proceedings in the high-profile drug trafficking case. Hours before the solemn fast begins, Maduro will face the judge to outline the next phases of one of the most significant legal cases in recent American history.
In a court filing submitted Tuesday night, prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and defense attorneys for Maduro proposed beginning the trial in June 2027. Judge Hellerstein will make the final decision on the timeline, with both parties noting that modifications may be requested later. According to the proposal, the first round of legal motions will follow the schedule set by the court.
Maduro and his wife were apprehended earlier this year in Caracas by U.S. forces operating under orders from President Donald Trump. The couple was brought to New York and charged with leveraging their official positions to facilitate massive cocaine shipments, charges to which both have pleaded not guilty.
During his initial court appearance on January 5, 2026, Maduro declared himself a political prisoner of war, while his defense attorney, Barry Pollack, signaled plans to challenge the legality of the capture itself. Maduro has long accused the U.S. of attempting to oust him to gain control over Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
Washington officially stopped recognizing Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate president in 2019, characterizing him as a corrupt leader who oversaw economic collapse and rigged elections.
Since Maduro's capture, Venezuela has been led by former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who has strengthened ties with the Trump administration. The U.S. has eased sanctions on the country's oil sector, enabling foreign energy companies to expand operations. Additionally, the U.S. military provided humanitarian assistance following two earthquakes that struck the Venezuelan coast last month, claiming more than 5,000 lives.
