Senior U.S. military officials have warned the Defense Department against expanding military operations against Iran, cautioning that sustained escalation would further deplete critical weapons stockpiles and potentially weaken America's defensive posture globally, according to reporting from The Washington Post.
The U.S. used approximately 200 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors and over 100 Standard Missiles defending Israel against Iranian missiles earlier this year, depleting roughly half of the Pentagon's total interceptor inventory. Military analysts told the Post that the data reveals the scale of the burden: the United States absorbed most of the missile defense mission while Israel conserved its own stocks.
According to the Post, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine warned the White House that limited munitions supplies, combined with uneven allied military support, could increase operational risks and expose U.S. forces in the region to greater danger.
The U.S. has fired more than 1,500 Patriot interceptors since the Iran war began, leaving fewer than 1,700 in inventory. A U.S. official told the Post that American forces lack sufficient THAAD interceptors to safely sustain the Iran air campaign.
The interceptor shortage has alarmed U.S. allies in Japan and South Korea, which rely on American deterrence against China and North Korea, as American military firepower has been diverted to the Middle East.
The Pentagon is now pressing defense firms to rapidly escalate weapons production, with Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg writing to industry leaders that they have 21 days to submit plans to dramatically accelerate delivery schedules.
