Poland's embassy in Washington has publicly accused Tucker Carlson of becoming "an apologist for Adolf Hitler," demanding that the American commentator retract and apologize for remarks justifying Nazi Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland.

The rebuke came in an open letter signed by Bogdan Klich, Poland's chargé d'affaires in Washington, and posted Monday on the embassy's X account. Klich wrote that he was outraged by what he called false and deeply troubling statements, and said they amounted to a grave insult to the millions of victims of Nazism, among them American servicemen who died fighting the Third Reich.

The letter responds to an interview Carlson conducted with British politician Jacob Rees-Mogg, which aired Friday. In it, Carlson questioned why Britain went to war and argued that Hitler had grounds to attack Poland. He repeated the Nazi leader's claim that roughly 15 percent of Poland had belonged to Germany before the Treaty of Versailles, calling it "German territory with Germans in it." Rees-Mogg told Carlson during the exchange that he appeared to be on the verge of defending Hitler, The National reported.

Klich accused Carlson of resorting to lies and falsifying the documented historical record. He demanded an immediate public retraction and apology, and wrote that Nazi propaganda "cannot be rehabilitated under the guise of free speech."

Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, prompting Britain and France to declare war. About six million Polish citizens were killed during the war, roughly half of them Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

Carlson had not responded publicly to the letter as of Monday evening.

It is not the first time Carlson has drawn condemnation over World War II revisionism. In September 2024 he hosted podcaster Darryl Cooper, who has made Nazi apologist claims about Hitler and Winston Churchill, in an interview that prompted a statement of protest from Jewish members of the House of Representatives.
