The crisis between National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Police Inspector General Dani Levy is entering the legal arena. The police chief is expected to meet today (Wednesday) with police legal advisor Eran Nahon to explore legal measures to force the transfer of funds Ben-Gvir is refusing to release to the force. At stake is approximately NIS 333 million stuck in the National Security Ministry, according to a report by i24News.
Meanwhile, a different confrontation is unfolding over senior officer appointments. Last week, Levy and the police command staff appointed 50 officers to the rank of deputy superintendent, but Ben-Gvir announced he would refuse to sign off on the appointments until after the elections, meaning the selected officers cannot assume their positions until then.
Meanwhile, attorney Ariel Sizel, legal counsel for the National Security Ministry, is backing the minister. Sizel reached out to police legal advisor Eran Nahon requesting his response: "We have learned that the command staff intends to convene to expand the round of appointments and discuss additional positions. I request your response as to how this intention aligns with the positions that were presented," he wrote.
