France Bordeaux Wildfires Force 250,000 to Evacuate

Massive wildfires continue to rage across southwestern France, directly threatening the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Overnight, approximately 55,000 additional residents were ordered to flee their homes, bringing the total number of evacuees in the region to more than 250,000 in one of the largest civilian evacuation operations in peacetime French history.

According to official figures, the blazes have consumed roughly 42,000 hectares, an area estimated to be four times the size of Paris, while destroying at least 240 homes and injuring 75 firefighters amid extreme heat, drought, and shifting high winds.

Fires Approach Bordeaux

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that the situation remains extremely unfavorable, stating that the fire became virulent and erratic again overnight, generating its own winds as it advanced toward Bordeaux.

Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave described the fire as being at the gates of the metropolitan area, roughly 15 kilometers away at its closest point, prompting the city to convert a major exhibition center into an emergency shelter for thousands of displaced residents.

Military Joins Firefighters

To bolster firefighting efforts, authorities again mobilized a converted military A400M cargo aircraft from the Istres air base to drop water and fire retardant over threatened woodlands in the Gironde region. Beyond Gironde, fires continue to burn across southern France, including in the Var region where a separate blaze burned thousands of hectares in less than a week, forcing local officials to warn of erratic fire behavior that could threaten previously cleared villages.

Widespread European Blazes

France is not alone in battling extreme blazes, as neighboring Spain also confronts uncontrolled wildfires across multiple regions with fast-moving flames jumping across tree lines under the influence of strong winds. Meteorologists warn that prolonged heatwaves and dry conditions across Europe are expected to persist, keeping regional fire risks elevated while French authorities urge citizens to exercise extreme caution and obey all evacuation orders.
