Religious Zionism Party Fractures: Minister Ofir Sofer Announces Retirement from Politics

Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer has announced his retirement from politics, citing ideological rifts with Religious Zionism leader Bezalel Smotrich over the Haredi IDF draft law.

Meeting of Religious Zionism party

Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer (Religious Zionism) announced on Wednesday that he is retiring from political life and will not run in the upcoming elections for the 26th Knesset. The decision comes amid deep ideological rifts between Sofer and the leader of the Religious Zionism party, Bezalel Smotrich, particularly over the draft law concerning Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) enlistment in the IDF.

The primary driver of the split is a deep dispute over the Haredi military draft, highlighting the growing internal fractures within the Religious Zionism political alliance.

In his retirement announcement, Minister Sofer emphasized the urgent need to bolster national security alongside building public unity. He noted that the casualties and wounds of war bear scars that will not heal quickly, serving to remind everyone of the immense responsibility they carry. He urged Israeli citizens to demand a public discourse rooted in unity, solidarity, and genuine partnership.

While stepping back from future political runs, Sofer clarified that he will continue to serve dedicatedly in his role as Minister of Aliyah and Integration until the current Knesset term is fully completed.

In response to the announcement, party leader Bezalel Smotrich stated that he respects the decision, adding that Ofir expresses an important voice in Israel and Religious Zionism, which has always been delivered in his characteristic and pleasant political style.
