The Trump administration has responded to the crisis by requesting a surge in defense spending. The fiscal year 2027 defense budget includes a $5.8 billion request for Tomahawk missiles, a 513 percent increase over the previous year's request. Pentagon spending for THAAD systems has risen 650 percent. Similar increases for Patriot missiles and precision strike weapons reflect the urgency with which the Pentagon views the shortage.
Yet increased funding alone cannot solve the problem. The weapons systems that are most depleted also require the longest production timelines. Patriot interceptors take more than two years to build. THAAD missiles require complex manufacturing that creates bottlenecks in the supply chain. Even with accelerated production, which Trump has called for defense contractors to undertake, requesting a quadrupling of output, the Center for Strategic and International Studies projects that stockpiles will not recover to pre-war levels until 2029 or 2030.
The Pentagon is currently receiving roughly 15 new Tomahawks and 20 Patriot missiles per month. There are no THAAD deliveries forecast for all of 2026. The mathematics are unforgiving: at those rates, rebuilding what has been consumed will require years.
The strategic anxiety is acute because the window of depletion coincides with the peak sensitivity of American military planners regarding China. The Pentagon has long warned that the critical period of vulnerability extends to any moment when the U.S. cannot simultaneously conduct a major war in the Middle East and credibly deter a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
"If it's a $1.5 trillion package for defense, I'm all in," said Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, speaking in support of emergency munitions spending. "The munitions are going to be there. We're going continue to do what we have to do to protect the world, protect Israel and everybody else in the region." But defense analysts note that there is no consistent agreement on how to balance commitments across regions during periods of acute shortage.
The calculation becomes more dangerous if Iran resumes significant hostilities. Trump announced last week that he considered the ceasefire "over," raising the prospect of resumed strikes at the very moment when U.S. stockpiles remain at historically low levels. If the campaign continues at the pace of July 2026—when recent waves of strikes suggested renewed momentum—the window of vulnerability in the Pacific would widen considerably.
"If the war continues at the rate it's been going for the last few days … it would reduce stockpiles enough that there would be a new, higher level of risk with the Indo-Pacific," Cancian said. The Pentagon, he noted, has not adjusted its plans for dealing with China to account for the depletion from Iran.
Defense officials have sought to forestall alarmism. In May, when Senator Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain, cited a Department of Defense briefing on stockpile depletion in public remarks, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth launched an investigation into the leak, signaling the sensitivity surrounding the issue.
The White House deputy press secretary asserted that the U.S. military "has more than enough munitions, ammo, and stockpiles to serve all of President Trump's strategic goals and beyond." Yet that statement does not address the more specific concern raised by defense analysts: the munitions most depleted are precisely those needed to defend against the most likely competitors.
What remains clear is that the Iran campaign has revealed a vulnerability in American military planning that extends beyond the current conflict. The U.S. has the industrial capacity to replace what it has used,but not in the timeframe required to hedge all bets simultaneously.
For China and Russia, the depletion offers a template. Both nations are tracking American stockpile levels through satellite imagery, industry reports, and the Pentagon's publicly available budget documents. The most dangerous moment in geopolitics may not be when an adversary is most capable, but when it calculates that the defender is most constrained.
That window exists now, and by most estimates, it will not close for at least three years.
