US Military Plane Lands in Moscow Amid Official Silence

A U.S. Air Force heavy transport aircraft made an unusual landing in Moscow on Tuesday, marking a rare direct military flight between the two countries since the war in Ukraine began.

The Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, tail number 07-7181 operating as RCH4555, touched down at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport after a short flight from Riga, Latvia, according to flight tracking service Flightradar24. The aircraft departed Riga around 8:50 a.m. Moscow time and landed approximately ten minutes later.

Flight records show the plane had arrived in the Latvian capital two days earlier, on August 23, from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, a facility near Washington, D.C., commonly used for official government flights carrying senior American officials.

Such direct military flights between the United States and Russia have become extremely rare since Russia's invasion of Ukraine roughly two years ago, making Tuesday's landing curious.

Neither government has offered an explanation for the flight. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters he had no information about the aircraft's arrival and said no meetings with U.S. administration representatives were scheduled in Moscow this week. The Pentagon has been equally silent, with a spokesman for U.S. European Command (EUCOM) saying he had no information to provide on the matter.

Reuters reported it could not verify whether the aircraft was carrying passengers or cargo. C-17 aircraft are designed to transport troops, heavy equipment, and cargo over long distances, with capacity for up to 77 tons of freight or 134 fully equipped soldiers.

The last confirmed direct flight of a U.S.-registered aircraft from Europe to Russia occurred in January 2026, when special envoys including Steven Witkoff and Jared Kushner traveled to Moscow for peace discussions with President Vladimir Putin regarding Ukraine. Those talks have since largely stalled amid developments in Iran and ongoing tensions between Washington and Moscow.

Videos purporting to show the aircraft over Moscow and during landing circulated rapidly on social media, particularly on X. Some commentators speculated about a covert diplomatic mission, prisoner exchange, or logistical support, though these remain unconfirmed theories. Additional unverified reports mentioned a convoy of vehicles with diplomatic plates in the area, but officials have not confirmed these sightings either.

The incident suggests that secret communication channels may remain open between Washington and Moscow even during periods of apparent diplomatic deadlock.
