Demographic Crisis Response

Singapore: $52K Per Child to Boost Births

The city-state will provide comprehensive support packages worth approximately $52,000 for each child through age 17, as fertility rates drop to historic lows

Singapore

Singapore is dramatically expanding financial support for families in response to a steep decline in births, announcing that each citizen child will receive a government support package totaling approximately 70,000 Singapore dollars, roughly $52,000 USD, from birth through age 17.

The initiative comes as the nation's fertility rate has plummeted to a historic low of approximately 0.87 children per woman, well below the replacement level needed to maintain population stability.

"We want every family to know: if you choose to have children, the government will stand with you," Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said, promising "more support for more years."

It's important to note that the package does not consist of a single lump-sum payment of $52,000. Instead, it comprises a series of payments and benefits distributed throughout the child's upbringing, including 10,000 Singapore dollars in cash at birth, annual payments of 2,000 Singapore dollars from age one through 16, and additional assistance for education and childcare expenses.

The new policy, scheduled to take effect in April 2027, represents part of Singapore's broader effort to encourage couples to have children and ease the substantial financial burden associated with raising them.
