U.S. Removes Syrian Group Jabhat al-Nusra from Terror List
The United States has officially removed Jabhat al-Nusra — the Syrian jihadist group that later became part of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — from its list of designated foreign terrorist organizations, according to a report by Barak Ravid. HTS, which now holds sway over parts of northwestern Syria, has long been led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, Syria’s current de facto president. While Jabhat al-Nusra originally operated as al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, the group formally distanced itself from al-Qaeda in 2016 as it rebranded under the HTS umbrella. The decision by Washington marks a significant shift in its approach to jihadist factions in Syria and reflects the complicated reality of power dynamics
