U.S. State Department outlines Lebanon-Israel ceasefire framework and terms
The U.S. State Department released an extensive statement detailing the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. The framework includes mutual recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, establishment of border security, and Israel's retention of self-defense rights. Both countries acknowledge the challenge posed by armed groups like Hezbollah that undermine Lebanese sovereignty. The agreement stipulates that only Lebanese government forces will be authorized to bear arms in Lebanon. Lebanon commits to preventing Hezbollah attacks against Israeli targets, while Israel retains the right to take necessary self-defense measures. The initial ceasefire period may be extended by mutual agreement.
