President Herzog on Netanyahu’s Pardon: Trial Should End with Agreed Plea Deal

Israeli President Isaac Herzog emphasized that Israel is a sovereign democratic state governed by the rule of law, with an independent judicial system. Speaking in recent interviews, Herzog expressed his view that Netanyahu’s trial should reach a conclusion now through an agreed plea deal. He called for an urgent, intensive dialogue between the involved parties, with the best interests of the country in mind — a position previously recommended by the courts several times. Regarding a possible pardon, Herzog stressed that the process can only begin if Netanyahu himself submits an official request, as is customary in Israel’s legal framework. This statement comes amid ongoing political tensions surrounding Netanyahu’s legal battles and calls for his trial to be halted.
