Teen Cyclist Vanishes in Iran

A dual French-German national, 18-year-old cyclist Lennart Montherlos, has been missing in Iran since June 16, raising alarm among European diplomats due to Iran’s track record of using Western citizens as bargaining chips. Before his disappearance, Montherlos had dismissed official travel advisories on his Instagram account, writing that his experiences in Iran were “completely different” than commonly portrayed and “very positive.” His sudden silence has triggered concern, especially given Tehran’s history of detaining foreign nationals under murky pretexts. The Iranian news outlet Iran News was among the first to report his disappearance.
