Arab League Official Discusses Potential Israel-Syria Agreement
Hussam Zaki, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League, commented on unconfirmed reports of a possible agreement between Israel and Syria during an interview with the pan-Arab channel Al-Ghad, as reported by journalist Roi Kais on July 9, 2025. “If these reports are true, or even partially true, then Syria is acting as a sovereign state, and as long as the world is satisfied that Syria is a state with freedom, independence, and sovereignty, there is no choice but to accept that this is a sovereign decision,” Zaki stated. The remarks reflect a pragmatic stance on Syria’s autonomy amid speculation about a rare diplomatic or strategic move with Israel, a nation it has been at war with since 1948. While details of the alleged agreement remain undisclosed, Zaki’s comments suggest international acceptance of Syria’s right to pursue such decisions, set against the backdrop of regional tensions, including Israel’s ongoing Gaza war and conflicts with Iran-backed proxies.
