Top Haredi Rabbi Blocks Mass Draft Protest — For Now
Rabbi Dov Landau, the leading figure of the Lithuanian ultra-Orthodox community, has ruled that the anticipated “Million Man Protest” against the IDF draft will not go ahead — at least for now. According to sources close to the rabbi, his decision stems from concern that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might politically exploit the protest, using it to deflect attention from his own role in the crisis. “He may try to turn the protest into a campaign against the Supreme Court,” said one senior Haredi source. “But he is no less responsible for this situation than the Court itself.” Landau’s statement is expected to significantly cool rising tensions within the ultra-Orthodox public, which has been bracing for a large-scale showdown over conscription legislation.
