France to Mark National Dreyfus Remembrance Day Starting in 2026

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Saturday that beginning July 12, 2026, France will officially commemorate a National Day of Remembrance in honor of Alfred Dreyfus, the Jewish army officer famously wrongfully convicted of treason. Macron noted that the date will mark the 120th anniversary of Dreyfus’s exoneration, calling it “a day to honor the triumph of justice and truth over hatred and antisemitism.” The decision aims to solidify the Dreyfus Affair’s place as a defining moment in the fight against antisemitism and miscarriages of justice in modern French history. The annual commemoration will include educational events, national ceremonies, and official recognition of Dreyfus’s legacy.
