Trump Willing to End Iran War Without Fully Reopening Hormuz Strait
President Trump has told aides he is willing to end the current U.S. war with Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains mostly closed, according to the Wall Street Journal. White House officials now estimate that reopening the strait by force would require a much longer and more dangerous military operation than Trump wants. The administration's immediate goal is to cripple Iran's navy, missile stockpiles, defense industry, and strike capability, then scale back fighting and apply diplomatic pressure on Tehran to allow shipping to resume. The U.S. may declare it has achieved its main war objectives without securing full freedom of navigation, hoping European and Gulf allies will later take on a greater share of securing the shipping route.
