Germany suffers first-ever World Cup penalty shootout loss, eliminated by Paraguay
Germany was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup by Paraguay in a penalty shootout, losing 4-3 on penalties in the round of 32. This marks the first time in World Cup history that Germany has lost a penalty shootout. Germany had previously won all four of its World Cup penalty shootouts: defeating France 5-4 in the 1982 semifinal, Mexico 4-1 in the 1986 quarterfinal, England 4-3 in the 1990 semifinal, and Argentina 4-2 in the 2006 quarterfinal.
