USS Nimitz Heads to Middle East on Final Mission After 50 Years of Service

The USS Nimitz, one of the U.S. Navy’s most iconic aircraft carriers, is en route to the Middle East on what is expected to be its final operational mission, Fox News reports. This marks the closing chapter of a five-decade career that began in the Cold War and included pivotal moments in U.S. military history. In 1980, helicopters launched from the Nimitz as part of Operation Eagle Claw—a failed attempt to rescue American hostages from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The mission ended in disaster and shaped U.S. special operations for decades to come. Now, amid escalating tensions with Iran, the Nimitz returns to the region where it made one of its most fateful debuts.
