VP's wife stumbles on Marine Two steps with baby strapped to her chest

A tense moment was captured yesterday at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland when Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, descended from Marine Two carrying her infant son.

Usha, 40, came down the helicopter stairs with nine-week-old Alec Neil Vance strapped to her in a baby carrier. A diaper bag hung from her shoulder, and she held the railing with one hand.

Near the bottom of the stairs, she appeared to miss a step and momentarily lost her balance. She nearly fell forward but quickly grabbed the second railing and steadied herself, with the baby still secured against her body.

Cameras recorded the stressful seconds. Military personnel were visible on the ground around her, but none appeared to approach her at that moment, a fact that drew considerable reaction on social media.

Usha recovered within seconds, appeared to smile, and reassured those around her that everything was fine. Shortly afterward, JD Vance emerged from the helicopter carrying their four-year-old daughter, Mirabel.

The family was en route to Alaska, where the Vice President attended a campaign rally for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. Vance also referenced traveling with the nine-week-old infant and noted that the flight was approximately seven and a half hours long.

Alec is the fourth child of the Vances. He was born on July 19 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland and became the first child born to a sitting Vice President since 1870.
